When Nick Moore '63 reflects about the "glue" that keeps him connected to Saint Mary's College, he mentions several influences. Shared experiences and strong connections with his classmates keep him close. His continuing involvement with Saint Mary's in several high-profile leadership roles has led to a deeper understanding of the College's mission and accomplishments. A strong family connection, with several Gael alumni in his family, also keeps him engaged. And his personal experience watching the transformation of students during their time at Saint Mary's - including two second cousins currently attending the College - continues to inspire him.

"My four years at Saint Mary's were good and productive. I left with a soft spot in my heart for the College," he says. Nick's class was particularly active and continues to see each other regularly. "Our class had a big turnout at our 50th reunion, we attend Saint Mary's sporting events, and get together in San Francisco," he said, adding that his wife JoAnne and other spouses organize their own get-togethers too.

After graduating with a B.S. in accounting from Saint Mary's, Nick earned a J.D. from Hastings College of Law at UC Berkeley. His distinguished career includes serving as chairman and chief executive officer of PricewatershouseCoopers LLP, previously holding that position with Coopers & Lybrand International until it merged with Price Waterhouse. Nick continues to serve on the board of directors for corporations such as Gilead Sciences and Bechtel Group Inc., as well as private technology companies.

Nick's volunteer commitments to Saint Mary's are similarly distinguished. He served for nine years on the Board of Trustees for Saint Mary's College, including as chairman, and as president of the Board of Regents. His generous and loyal giving to the College has earned him the recognition at the Signum Fidei and President's Circle levels. "As a board member, I came to realize the complexities and challenges of running an educational institution. This knowledge makes it easier to be supportive, and I hope that others may be influenced by my giving," he said.

Recently, Nick chose to donate to Saint Mary's College through an IRA rollover. He explains that it is a tax-savvy option for donors who will pay estate taxes, because otherwise any assets in IRAs could be taxed twice - once as an asset and again as part of an estate. Nick applied his IRA rollover to his pledge payment toward the Student Athletic Performance Center. "I want to take advantage of opportunities to give now. I believe in the mission and the objectives of the College, and feel good that I'm able to contribute to an institution that's going to use these funds wisely," he said. Nick is a strong supporter of athletics at the College, and sees the sports programs, particularly men's basketball as "high leverage" and "important to the school in a way that goes beyond sports." He also supports the rugby program, particularly because his son Garrett '93 played rugby for the College.

"We feel grateful and blessed for Nick's leadership, generosity, and commitment to the values and mission of Saint Mary's College," said President Jim Donohue. "A particular priority for Nick is to ensure that the College continues to effectively reach out to people with lesser means and provide them with an excellent education."
